Seniors Golf

Bobby Smith 1923-2020

Newburgh’s senior Senior Golfer, Bobby Smith, has passed away after a short illness.

Bobby was a remarkable golfer who achieved the feat of beating his age off scratch, each year until his final year.

He represented Newburgh on Ythan Golf Club over many decades and he was a founder member of the Buchan Seniors Golf Association. In the BSGA’s inter-club competition, the House of Commons Cup, Bobby was a stalwart performer in the Newburgh team in each of their victories in the annual competition- in 1998 and in 2011.

Those of us who were lucky enough to play in Bobby Smith’s company learned a lot from him about the golf course and its history, and about playing and being competitive in the game of golf. Bobby took great pleasure in participating in the Seniors weekly competitions, the regular summer outings and the annual presentation dinners.

On his 90th birthday he donated the “Bobby Smith Cup” played over two rounds of his favourite Stableford format and he took great delight in presenting the cup to the latest winner at each Christmas Dinner.

The photos below are a brief illustration of his participation in the Seniors group.
